Sewage monitoring system developed by Latvian scientists used to detect Covid-19 in 15 cities
RIGA, Feb 10 (LETA) - The sewage monitoring system developed by Latvian scientists is being used to detect presence of Covid-19 in sewage and the environment in 15 Latvian cities, said Health Ministry's chief infectologist Uga Dumpis in a panel discussion Science Against Covid-19 today.
Dumpis said that, studying more than 80 samples, the sewage monitoring system has proved that it is possible to identify a Covid-19 outbreak five to seven before actual increase in Covid-19 incidence. Dumpis said that the method has been fully developed and is ready for use also broader.
The expert said that this helps to apply targeted and local safety measures, identify an outbreak in particular institutions.
The method has been developed by the Riga Technical University, the Biomedical Research and Study Center and BIOR institute of food safety, animal health and environment.
