Latvia included in dark red zone on EU's Covid-19 map
RIGA, Feb 4 (LETA) - The entire territory of Latvia has been included in the dark red zone of the Covid-19 map the European Center for Disease Prevention (ECDC) prepares weekly to coordinate coronavirus travel restrictions.
The dark red zone on the map indicates that the cumulative 14-day Covid-19 incidence in these territories is very high and exceeds 500 cases per 100,000 population.
Latvia, along with Estonia, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Portugal are the only members of the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) included in the dark red zone on the ECDC's infection map.
In Lithuania, only the Vinius region has been included in the dark red zone, while the rest of Lithuanian territory is in the red zone where the cumulative 14-day Covid-19 incidence per 100,000 population is between 150 and 500 cases.
Spain, Sweden, Ireland, Slovakia, France, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands also have areas in the dark red category.
According to the ECDC's estimates for the past two weeks, Latvia's cumulative 14-day Covid-19 incidence was 550.9 per 100,000 population in the period from January 18 to 31, ranking Latvia fifth among EU and EEA member states. Higher incidence rates were only recorded in Portugal, Spain, the Czech Republic and Slovenia.
Latvia's Covid-19 incidence is also the highest in the Baltics at the moment. In the past two weeks, Lithuania's cumulative Covid-19 incidence has been 533.3 cases per 100,000 population and Estonia's Covid-19 incidence has been 518.1 cases per 100,000 population.
EU regions have been divided into green, orange, red, and new 'dark red' zones, according to Covid-19 infection rates, with dark red denoting a very high infection rate.
