Voter turnout in Riga lower than four years ago - head of Riga election commission
RIGA, Oct 1 (LETA) - The current data show that voter turnout in the Latvian capital is lower than during the previous elections four years ago, Maris Zviedris, the head of Riga election commission told LETA.
Until 4 pm today, the voter turnout was nearly 30 percent compared to 35.7 percent four years ago.
Asked about the long lines by polling stations in Riga, he said that the number of polling stations is set by the law, therefore it cannot be said that there are not enough polling stations.
Zviedris confirmed that in the morning there were some problems with the electronic voter registration system, but there were no more problems during the day.
The polling stations will be closed at 8 pm, and counting of votes will be started immediately. Smaller polling stations might start announcing the results already at 9 pm.
As reported, the 14th Saeima elections are being held today, when 949 polling stations are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Altogether there are 1,542,407 eligible voters in Latvia and abroad.
