Vidzeme Party wins local elections in Valka

Riga, June 8 (LETA) - The Vidzeme Party has won the local elections in Valka, according to data published by the Central Election Commission.

Counting the votes in all eight polling stations in Valka, the Vidzeme Party won 60.17 percent of the votes, which will give it nine seats. This means that the political power in the municipality will change, because until now the post of mayor of the municipality was held by Gita Avote, who stood in these elections on the list of For Latvia's Development/Latvian Farmers' Union.

The list represented by the previous mayor came second with 23.04 percent of the votes. This will give the list four seats in the regional council.

The Progressives won 7.29 percent of the votes, while the National Alliance won 7.09 percent. Both lists will get one seat in the council.

The joint list of the parties Sovereign Power and the Union of New Latvians did not overcome the 5 percent barrier in Valka.
