Red flood warning issued for eastern regions of Latvia in next 24 hours
RIGA, June 13 (LETA) - According to the latest weather forecasts, a low pressure system will reach Latvia from the south in the next 24 hours, bringing a long and very heavy rain to eastern regions of Latvia, mostly on Tuesday.
As the ground is already wet, the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center and the State Fire and Rescue Service have issued a red flood warning.
The red warning will be in effect in Latgale and Selija provinces, as well as eastern Vidzeme. Orange flood warning has been issued for western Vidzeme and eastern Zemgale.
Extensive flooding is expected in said areas, which could pose a security risk and necessitate evacuations. Electricity, water supplies and telecommunications may be disrupted.
Along with heavy rainfall, water levels in rivers and lakes are expected to rise in the coming days, flooding lowlands and floodplains.
Weather forecasters predict that in the second half of the night rainfall in eastern regions of Latvia will reach 20-30 millimeters. On June 14, very heavy rainfall is expected in the east with a precipitation of 40-50 millimeters, and in some areas the rainfall will be amount to 60-70 millimeters in 12 hours.
