Truksnis wants broadest possible coalition in Jurmala City Council

Riga, June 8 (LETA) - The leader of the list that won the most support in the elections, former mayor Gatis Truksnis (Latvia's Green Party), told LETA that it is necessary to form as broad a coalition as possible in the Jurmala City Council.

He said that talks on the coalition were planned to start next week, but it was clear that the Latvia's Green Party should be the core of the coalition. At the same time, he stressed that he wants to talk to all political forces elected in the city.

"We have to allow the lawmakers to work for the citizens, with the coalition working for as many people as possible", said the former mayor.

He said that the only obstacle could be, for example, some human contradictions, as municipalities should think more about economic issues than party affiliations.

Although Truksnis said that the outlines of the coalition are "99 percent clear", he does not want to reveal them.

Asked why he thought the list of the Union of Greens and Farmers, represented by the incumbent council president Rita Sproge, had received little support from voters, he said that this too "was more or less Truksnis' team".

"Throughout the pre-election period we have not said anything bad about others. We have proved that we do what we promise, that we can be trusted. Perhaps everything is more associated with me," the politician commented on his success.

Asked whether Greens/Farmers could continue to be "Truksnis' team", he reiterated that he did not want to reveal a possible coalition before talks with all political forces.

As reported, Latvia's Green Party, represented by former Jurmala mayor Gatis Truksnis, has won the municipal elections in Jurmala, according to data published by the Central Election Commission (CVK).

Counting the votes in all 18 polling stations in Jurmala, Latvia's Green Party received 35.31 percent of the votes and six of the 15 seats in the city council. It is followed by the National Alliance with 22.4 percent of the votes and four council seats.

In third place is the list of the Union of Greens and Farmersa, represented by the incumbent council chairwoman Rita Sproge, with 12.26 percent of the votes and two seats on the council.

This is followed by Harmony with 7.77 percent, Progressives with 7.34 percent and Latvia First with 6.08 percent, each winning one seat.

According to the CVK data, 49.46 percent of eligible voters in Jurmala took part in these municipal elections.
