VNI to sign first agreements on construction of Latvia's eastern border in late February

RIGA, Nov 17 (LETA) - Valsts Nekustamie Ipasumi (VNI) state property manager will sign the first agreements on construction of Latvia's eastern border in late February, VNO board chairman Renars Griskevics said in an interview with the Latvian public radio today.

Griskevics said that VNI has got acquainted with the old construction project and concluded that it cannot be used fully, therefore improvement should be introduced. Also, discussions with nature protection institutions are underway to learn about their requirements for the fence on the border.

In late December VNI plans to start selection of candidates for the construction works, but the first agreements with builders could be signed in late February.

The project provides for construction of the eastern border in a stretch of 170 kilometers. The project will be divided into smaller sections and procurement tender will be organized for each section separately to speed up the process.

As reported, construction works on the eastern border have been suspended due to violations in procedures. Right now temporary fence is being built on the Latvian-Belarusian border.
