Riga City Council adopts sustainable energy and climate action plan
RIGA, May 25 (LETA) - Riga City Council today adopted a sustainable energy and climate action plan 2022-2030, envisaging sizable investments intended to promote the city's energy independence, reduce fossil fuel imports and increase the share and rational use of local energy sources.
To achieve the goals set forth in the plan, the local authority plans to implement 112 measures, which are expected to cost an estimated EUR 2.7 billion until 2030, part of which would be provided by EU funds. The overall goal of the action plan is to reduce CO2 emissions in Riga by 30 percent as compared to 2019 and achieve complete climate neutrality by 2050.
The municipal sector aims at achieving climate neutrality already in 2030 by cutting emissions and motivating market players to generate renewable energy.
A total of 17 various measures are planned for the municipality's infrastructure, for instance, a launch, constant upgrading and certification of an energy management system, providing 100 percent renewable energy to municipal buildings, renovation of municipal buildings, modernization of street lighting, increasing the energy efficiency of municipal transport vehicles, etc.
