Clear plan necessary for Ukrainian refugees - association

RIGA, May 24 (LETA0 - A clear plan is necessary for Ukrainian refugees, said Vents Armands Krauklis (Vidzeme Party), the chairman of the Association of Regional Development Centers (RACA) and Valka municipal council chairman, during a discussion on support for Ukrainian war refugees in Latvian regions.

The Ukrainian refugees have gone through unimaginable horrors, and uncertainty about the future living conditions puts them in a huge stress in addition to worries about their homes and relatives who have stayed in Ukraine. A situation when refugees are told to move out of their current place of accommodation and deal with the situation on their own is unacceptable.

Saldus municipal council chairman Maris Zusts (Latvia's Green party) said that the government makes decisions on support to Ukrainian refugees with delays. People learn all the necessary information in due time so that they know what to do, said Zusts.

Also, Zusts is confident that representatives from local governments should be present in decision making because they know and understand the real situation with refugees in the regions.

Sworn lawyer Ilze Bagatska who is coordinating admission of Ukraine's young basketball players, said that there are disabled people, senior citizens and mothers with small children among refugees who will not be able to work. It is important to be aware how many such people there are who will need support also in the future. There are also groups from sports clubs with one adult per ten children, and they will not be able to find suitable accommodation.

Sigulda municipal council chairman Ugis Mitrevics (National Alliance) said that also among those Ukrainians who will be able to start work in Latvia still will need support of the same level as Latvian residents.

Mitrevics also said that there is a shortage of rental apartments in many municipalities. Hotels that accommodated refugees earlier, now are willing to return back to tourism business.
