Ice accumulation in Gauja River at Carnikava could be blasted
RIGA, March 3 (LETA) - In order to prevent possible floods, the possibility of blasting ice compaction in Carnikava Region is being considered, Monika Griezne, the head of public relations at Adazi Regional Council, informed LETA.
Maris Sprindzuks (Latvian Alliance of Regions), Chairman of the Civil Protection Commission of the Saulkrasti Cooperation Territory, convened an external meeting of the Civil Protection Commission of the Cooperation Territory today to discuss the ice compaction in the Gauja River in Carnikava Region.
As a result of ice compaction, the water level in the Gauja River in Carnikava Region and Adazi Region is rising, endangering the safety of residents, the environment and property in populated areas near the Gauja.
During the meeting, a decision will be made to send a request for the involvement of the National Armed Forces in the ice blasting in the Gauja to prevent flooding.
The ice in the Gauja has halted about about 1.5 km from the mouth of the sea near Celaji. The water level is rising rapidly, with a mark at a local bridge showing 180 centimeters.
The meadows near the Carnikava promenade have already been flooded.
