3,350 Ukrainian refugees have sought assistance at Latvia's local governments since start of war
RIGA, March 15 (LETA) - Since the start of the war in Ukraine, 3,350 Ukrainian refugees have sought assistance at Latvia's local governments, Interior Ministry Parliamentary Secretary Martins Steins (Development/For) told the Saeima Defense, Interior and Corruption Prevention Committee on Tuesday.
The Ukrainian war refugees include 41 minors, 44 woman and just 8 percent men. Of these people, 856 have sought assistance in Riga, while the rest sought assistance in other regions of Latvia.
A total of 1,601 persons needed accommodation, while 953 Ukrainian citizens have been issued humanitarian visas with work permits. Latvia's municipalities are currently able to provide accommodation and food to 6,238 people.
To dat, around 6,000 of the people fleeing war in Ukraine have arrived in Latvia. As LETA reported, many of them are staying with their relatives or friends in Latvia.
Meanwhile, Ukrainians that have biometric passports and do not need social support or accommodation, can stay in Latvia for up to 90 days without reporting to Latvian authorities.
Authorities in cooperation with local governments are currently working on a solution to admit 500 Ukrainian war refugees currently located in Moldova, Interior Ministry's State Secretary Dimitrijs Trofimovs informed LETA.
