Riga might ban fireworks in city
RIGA, March 22 (LETA) - The Riga City Council might ban use of fireworks in the city, Riga Mayor Martins Stakis said in an interview with commercial TV3 television today.
Commenting on the calls spread on social networks not to organize fireworks or even ban them because Ukrainian refugees who have arrived in Latvia from their home are startled from the noise reminding them of the war, Stakis said that "organization of fireworks right now would be a special form of cruelty".
"There are regulations in Riga, stating when the fireworks are allowed, but lawmakers from For/Progressives have prepared a proposal on banning fireworks in Riga," the politician said.
The proposal is now being assessed by lawyers. Stakis said that the day when the Ukrainian army defeats the occupant army might be a good day for fireworks.
