Russian and Belarusian special services interested in recruiting local government officials in Latvian border areas
RIGA, July 9 (LETA) - The special services of Russia and Belarus are particularly interested in recruiting officials of Latvian municipalities located near the eastern border and where the troops of allied countries are stationed within the framework of NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence, the State Security Service (VDD) admitted to LETA.
Russia and Belarus share a view of NATO as their strategic adversary, therefore the special services of these countries work together with each other in obtaining intelligence on the members of the alliance.
The special services of Russia and Belarus have always been interested in recruiting Latvian state and local government officials who have information containing classified information or other information about Latvia and its allied countries, according to the VDD.
The analysis of the information carried out by the VDD shows that the interests of the special services of Russia and Belarus currently include response measures by Latvia and its allied countries to Russia's military aggression in Ukraine, including the increase of military capacity on NATO's external border.
Also, the special services of unfriendly countries are interested in any information about Latvia's border regions that would be useful for the renewal of operational plans in case the situation escalates to a wider military conflict.
Taking into account the range of interests, the special services of Russia and Belarus are particularly interested in recruiting officials from Latvian municipalities that are located near the eastern border of Latvia and where allied forces are stationed.
