Latvia nominates Kuldiga for UNESCO World Heritage List

RIGA, Jan 20 (LETA) - Latvia has nominated Kuldiga for the UNESCO World Heritage List, Kuldiga county's representative Kristine Dulbinska reported.

The nomination on Wednesday was signed by Culture Minister Nauris Puntulis (National Alliance) .

Dulbinska reminded that the idea about nominating Kuldiga for the UNESCO World Heritage List has been long-cherished, since 1997 when Latvia ratified the UNESCO Convention. Work on the nomination was started in 2001.

The minister noted that Kuldiga bears a unique testimony to the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia and its era of urban growth.

The Kuldiga local council underscored that Kuldiga has been on the UNESCO Latvia's National Register since 2004.

Presently, Latvia is represented in the UNESCO World Heritage List with the historical center of Riga (1997) and Struve Geodetic Arc (2005).
