RIGA, Feb 25 (LETA) - Liepaja and Dienvidkurzeme municipalities are ready to admit about 1,500 refugees from Ukraine, LETA learned from Liepaja city council spokeswoman Zita Lazdane.
Today the civil defense committee members of Liepaja and Dienvidkurzeme agreed on several steps in relation with the situation in Ukraine, cooperation with the state and municipal institutions and admission of potential refugees.
The committee members agreed to prepare informative materials in the Ukrainian language and publish information on internet website liepaja.lv.
As reported, also other local governments in Latvia have already voiced readiness to accommodate refugees from Ukraine.
The Latvian government is preparing a special law for the taking in of war refugees from Ukraine.
It is currently unknown whether refugees will arrive from Ukraine and the approximate number, but the Ministry of the Interior estimates that approximately 10,000 people may arrive in Latvia. It is currently envisaged that refugees will be accommodated in hotels instead of in special camps. Some could also live with relatives or acquaintances, Interior Minister Marija Golubeva (For Development) said on Thursday morning.
