RIGA, April 12 (LETA) - Capacity of Daugavpils municipality to admit Ukrainian refugees has been nearly exhausted, Daugavpils Mayor Andrejs Elksnins (Harmony) said in a press conference on Tuesday.

The municipality has received 450 refugees from Ukraine. 220 of them have been accommodated in hostels provided by the municipalities, while others have found housing with their friends or relatives.

"The government's decision on "accommodation quotas" cannot be applied in normal circumstances because the accommodation capacity in each municipality should be assessed first," said Elksnins, adding that Daugavpils' capacity has been nearly exhausted. The municipality is able to accommodate about 30 more refugees.

As reported, the Cabinet of Ministers decided that when a municipality reaches the maximum number of accommodation for Ukrainian refugees set by the Cabinet of Ministers, the state will have the right to transfer refugees to other municipalities.

This is envisaged by the amendments to the Ukrainian Civilian Support Law supported by the government on Tuesday, which also plans to determine the number of Ukrainian refugees to be accommodated in each municipality, taking into account the possible number of arrivals in Latvia and the population of the municipality.

The draft law stipulates that the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) maintains information on the number of Ukrainian civilians accommodated in the municipality in accordance with the procedure provided for in this law.
