Full assessment of situation is needed to ensure Saeima election process - Berzina

Riga, June 11 (LETA) - A full assessment of the situation is needed to ensure the Saeima election process, said Smart Administration and Regional Development Minister Inga Berzina (New Unity), who announced her resignation on Wednesday.

"Assuming political responsibility for the technical problems that occurred during the elections, I have decided to resign as the Minister of Smart Administration and Regional Development," the minister said.

However, she believes that further work is needed to fully assess the situation and clarify the circumstances in order to ensure the quality of the parliamentary election process in October 2026.

The minister looks with satisfaction at the achievements - the establishment of the Artificial Intelligence Centre, the action plan for the eastern border areas and progress towards a governance model for the development of the Riga Metropolitan Area and the work done in the field of nature conservation.

As reported, Berzina announced her resignation as Smart Administration and Regional Development Minister on Wednesday by tendering resignation to Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity), who accepted it.

As reported, vote counting following last weekend's municipal elections in Latvia was marred by technical glitches, which were reported in the electoral system already during early voting.

At the moment, an inter-institutional task force has not launched a probe into the problems with the vote counting, as it initially needs to gather all the necessary and available information on what happened, Raivis Kronbergs, director of the State Chancellery, told members of the press on Monday.

He said that until last week, there was "confidence" that everything would work properly because there were no indications that anything could go wrong. "If we had not been sure of that, we would certainly have taken decisions sooner," he added, reiterating that there were no indications that the system's capacity would prove insufficient.
