Trupovnieks elected chairman of Balvi municipal council
Riga, June 20 (LETA) - On Friday, Janis Trupovnieks (Latvia's Green Party), who has already served as the mayor of Balvi, was elected chairman of the Balvi municipal council.
Nine lawmakers voted for Trupovnieks, four were against him and two abstained.
The other candidate, the previous mayor, Sergejs Maksimovs (Latgale Party), received five votes for, five against and five abstentions.
Trupovnieks has chaired both Balvi City Council from 2001 to 2005 and Balvi municipal council from 2009 to 2011.
The Latgale Party received 27.41 percnt of the vote in Balvi municipality, which gave it five seats in the council.
Latvia's Green Party came second with 21.4 percent of the votes and won four seats in the council. The third place with 14.96 percent of the votes went to the Union of Greens and Farmers, which gives it two seats.
The National Alliance follows with 12.36 percent of the votes and has also won two seats in the municipal council. The Latvia First party won one seat with 8.83 percent of the votes. Another seat in the Balvi municipal council was won by the party For Latvia's Development with 5.76 percent of votes.
