RIGA, march 14 (LETA) - Interior Minister Marija Golubeva (For Development) has called on other municipalities also to establish refugee coordination centers like in Riga, she said in a Twitter post.

Admission of Ukrainian war refugees in Latvia is a solidarity test, and Latvia will be able to help refugees by joining all forces. It is not a responsibility of separate services or ministries, the minister said.

Solidarity of local governments is also essential. The minister thanked Riga and cities who have already established coordination centers, but she hopes that other municipalities will join.

The Interior Ministry will support local governments in cooperation with the State Border Guard, the Citizenship and Migration Affairs Board, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD).

In cooperation with VUGD, 2,608 Ukrainian refugees have found homes in different municipalities.

"It is also important to think what happens next with these people. Almost 600 people have been issued visas with the right for employment. People should be given opportunity to work and provide for themselves instead of being dependent on municipal support," the minister said.

As reported, the government on Saturday decided to cover expenses of local governments for accommodation and catering for refugees.

On February 24, Russia unleashed a war in Ukraine, targeting not only military, but also residential areas, Belarusian army entered the territory of Ukraine on March 1. More than two million civilians have been forced to flee their home and country. Thousands have arrived in Latvia.
