VDAA director Liops should assume responsibility for problems in organization of elections - minister

Riga, June 8 (LETA) - The State Digital Development Agency (VDAA) director Jorens Liops should take full responsibility for the problems in organizing the elections, believes Smart Administration and Regional Development Director Inga Berzina (New Unity).

Berzina stressed on social media that the elections have taken place and the most important thing now is to finish the counting, but she believes that the director of the VDAA should take full responsibility for what happened.

She promises that concrete decisions will be taken once the electoral process is concluded.

The minister thanked the voters for voting and the election commissions for their responsible and patient work.

As reported, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics said that the Central Election Commission (CVK) and the State Digital Development Agency (VDAA) have failed in organizing local elections.

In a post on social networks, he thanked all citizens who took part in the municipal elections yesterday.

"Thank you to all the members of the election commissions for their resilience and dedication while working in difficult circumstances. Unfortunately, the CVK and the VDAA have failed in organizing this process, the Saeima and the government should evaluate the work of these institutions and the responsibility of their officials," Rinkevics said.

The official believes that there should be concrete solutions to ensure that next year's Saeima elections are held smoothly and without incidents like these municipal elections.

"We will also consider this matter at next week's meeting of the National Security Council," the top state official promised.

As reported, the counting of votes in the 2025 municipal elections faced technical problems on Saturday and overnight into Sunday. Polling stations also faced technical problems during the week of advance voting.
