Riga, Jan 9 (LETA) - Climate and Energy Minister Kaspars Melnis (Greens/Farmers) will pay a regional visit to Daugavpils on Friday to meet with the heads of Latgale municipalities and representatives of regional media, representatives of the Climate and Energy Ministry informed LETA.

The most pressing issue of the visit is the synchronization of the Baltic states with continental Europe, which will take place in a month, ministry said.

The minister will discuss with the heads of Latgale municipalities all issues related to synchronization with the European electricity infrastructure, the infrastructure improvement works carried out, strengthening Latvia's energy security.

During the meeting, the minister will also discuss issues such as the development of the energy production sector in Latgale, the current support programs for the introduction of energy-efficient technologies at both the municipal and household levels, and the proposals of Latgale municipal leaders for sectoral development.

At the same time, the challenges affecting the sustainable development of the region, possible solutions to strengthen the role of local self-governments in energy efficiency and renewable resources use, as well as to ensure effective adaptation to climate change affecting local communities and infrastructure will be discussed.

During the meeting with media representatives, the minister will inform about the upcoming accession of the Baltic states to the European energy system on February 8-9 this year, the development of renewable energy projects in Latvia, current support programs and other topical issues.
