EUR 100,000 collected in fundraiser campaign for dismantling Soviet-era monument in Pardaugava
RIGA, May 12 (LETA) - Already EUR 100,000 have been collected in a fundraising campaign for dismantling the Soviet-era monument in Pardaugava, Riga.
The number of people submitting donations has already exceeded 6,100 by Thursday afternoon.
Ziedot.lv charity platform representative Ilze Osane said that the recent events in Riga have demonstrated that Latvia's society will not tolerate aggression, provocations and instigation of hatred. “The people of Latvia care about a free and democratic state, so there is no place for the “Occupation Monument” in Latvia. It is a symbol of the occupation where the preachers of war and violence gather and the slogans and symbols of their occupation tarnish the history, dignity, and values of our nation,” the description of the fundraiser says.
Ziedot.lv thanks May 4 Declaration Club for support to this initiative.
Osane said that dismantling of the monument is an opportunity to consolidate the society. Also the Russian-speaking population have a chance to stand together and voice their support to an independent Latvia, being aware that the "liberators" liberated Latvia from its independence and occupied after World War II. It is a chance for the whole society to stand against Russia's attack on a free and independent Ukraine.
The fundraising campaign was launched on Ziedot.lv charity platform on Wednesday.
