Latvia to begin preparations on re-vaccination of residents against Covid-19
RIGA, May 13 (LETA) - Latvia will start preparing for the booster vaccination of the population against Covid-19, according to a presentation submitted to the government by the Ministry of Health.
The ministry notes that there are currently no recommendations from international organizations for third-dose vaccination. The duration of protection of the first vaccines is still being monitored. It is currently known that protection lasts for at least eight months. There are no observations for a longer period of time.
As the ministry explains, no country has decided on re-vaccination yet, but in some countries the planning of this booster dose is at an early stage, or at the idea stage.
Although it is not known at this time whether a third dose of the vaccine or a regular booster dose will be required, preparations should be made if necessary.
These include vaccine portfolio preparation, vaccination capacity and other matters.
In addition, it is necessary to provide funds for the purchase of vaccines. The Ministry of Health indicates that EUR 35.7 million are needed for the purchase of vaccines for the third or booster vaccination, and EUR 18.7 million for the administration of vaccines.
In total, including other purposes - providing information, technical support and strengthening capacity, the third vaccine or booster vaccination requires EUR 58.1 million .
According to the ministry, part of these funds are already reserved.
