Constitutional Court receives multiple complaints over Covid-19 restrictions
RIGA, Jan 5 (LETA) - Last month, the Constitutional Court received multiple complaints over Covid-19 restrictions, including the requirement that people wear face masks, restrictions on gatherings and others, the Constitutional Court's Chairwoman Sanita Osipova says in an interview with Latvijas Avize newspaper.
The complaints are still being reviewed by the Constitutional Court's judges, no cases have been opened as yet, says Osipova, explaining that review of a complaint may take one to two months.
In the interview, Osipova also reveals that the first judgement in any of the cases contesting the administrative territorial reform may be expected this coming spring, before the Central Election Commission launches preparations for the municipal elections in June.
The Constitutional Court still continues to receive local governments' complaints over the administrative territorial reform. The court will start reviewing the first case against the reform on January 13.
"Every local government that turns to the Constitutional Court has its own reasons for doing so. To the court, it will be important to assess the legislative process behind the bill based on which the municipal reform will be carried out," says Osipova.
She goes on to say that the number of the Constitutional Court's judges will be increased to seven as the number of cases reviewed by the court has increased significantly. Last year the Constitutional Court opened 66 cases - an almost twofold increase on 2019 when 38 cases were started.
