Interim administration in Rezekne reviewing development projects approved by dissolved council

RIGA, Oct 4 (LETA) - The interim administration of the municipality of Rezekne is reviewing the development projects approved by the dissolved city council, Guna Puce, head of the administration, told LETA in an interview.

She said that a list of development projects was approved at one of the last council meetings and would now be re-evaluated in full, assessing whether the project is important to the municipality at all, whether it can afford to sustain it in the long term and also what potential sources of funding would be.

"It is very challenging with this issue because looking at the overall financial situation, there is a feeling that the municipality cannot afford anything at the moment," said Puce.

But she stresses that they cannot stop completely either, because in the long term it will have negative consequences.

"All the other municipalities are making these investments, so there has to be proportionality, there has to be further development and investment," says the head of the interim administration.

The list to be assessed is two pages, about 20 projects in total.

"I assume that most of them are ones where there is a question whether this is really the first priority of the municipality," said Puce, acknowledging that the development of the industrial park could be a priority, as it is a long-term contribution and also to promote entrepreneurship and attract investment.

At the same time, many construction projects, such as the reconstruction of the cultural center, are unclear, as they have relatively little co-financing from the Structural Funds and are quite a burden for the municipality.

"The question is therefore whether this is the most critical project needed in the long term. The House of Culture is certainly needed, because it houses collectives, a theater, but in this moment of financial crisis it is unlikely to be the primary need," concluded the head of the interim administration.
