Accommodation facilities for Ukrainian refugees in Jelgava municipality filled to capacity

RIGA, May 30 (LETA) - In  the central Latvian municipality of Jelgava, accommodation facilities for Ukrainian refugees have been filled up to capacity, LETA was told at the municipality.

At present, the Jelgava municipality has provided accommodation to around 330 Ukrainian war refugees.

For the time being, refugees are not being accommodated in facilities like gyms and halls, as some refugees leave the Jelgava municipality for other municipalities or Ukraine, while others arrive, local officials said.

The Jelgava municipality is planning to provide more beds for refugees with the government's support. In case of a larger influx of refugees, they might be housed in schools or sports facilities, but for the time being there is no such necessity.

Local authorities believe that long-term support plans should include the possibility  to create jobs closer to the Ukrainians' temporary homes, so that they could work and receive social protection if they stay in the municipality for more than 90 days.

As reported, the Saeima last week passed in the final reading amendments to the law on support for Ukrainian civilians, stating that Ukrainian war refugees who have arrived in Latvia will be provided with free meals and accommodation for 30 more days.

After the decision to prolong the period in which Ukrainian refugees are provided with free food and accommodation by 30 days, medium and long-term solutions for the provision of further support to the refugees have to be found in two weeks' time, Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) said while meeting with leaders of the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments (LPS).
