Fewer councilors to be elected in municipalities of Rezekne, Aizkraukle and Dobele in 2025 local elections
RIGA, Jan 9 (LETA) - The number of council members to be elected in this summer's municipal elections will be reduced in the municipalities of Rezekne, Aizkraukle and Dobele, according to a decision taken by the Central Election Commission.
These municipalities previously had 19 councilors each, but now the number of councilors in these municipalities has been reduced to 15.
Other municipalities that will have 15 councilors include the cities of Daugavpils, Jelgava, Jurmala and Liepaja, as well as municipalities of Aizkraukle, Aluksne, Augsdaugava, Adazi, Balvi, Dobele, Gulbene, Kraslava, Kuldiga, Limbazi, Livani, Ludza, Olaine, Preili, Rezekne, Salaspils, Saldus, Saulkrasti, Smiltene, Valka, and Ventspils.
Voters will elect 19 councilors in the municipalities in Bauska, Cesis, Dienvidkurzeme, Jelgava, Jekabpils, Kekava, Madona, Marupe, Ropazi, Sigulda, Talsi, Tukums, and Valmiera.
Meanwhile, 23 councilors will be elected in the municipality of Ogre, and 60 candidates like before will be elected to Riga City Council.
The Central Election Commission has set the number of councilors to be elected to municipal councils in accordance with the Law on the Election of Local Government Councils and based on population data in the Register of Natural Persons.
Latvia will hold local elections June 7, 2025.
