New mayor to be elected for Jelgava tonight
RIGA, Jan 19 (LETA) - Jelgava City Council will hold an extraordinary meeting this evening to elect a new mayor for the city, LETA learned from the municipality.
The meeting will start at 6 p.m. and will be streamed on the city council's website.
As reported, the previous Jelgava Mayor Ziedonis Caune (Latvian Farmers' Union) was removed from office in a no-confidence vote on January 5.
Caune was absent from the meeting of the regional council whose members voted on his removal. He was removed from office by 11 votes to four and three abstentions.
LETA also reported, Caune said in December 2021 that he planned to step down after municipal budget was passed because of what he called "political pressure''. He said that a redistribution of power was taking place on the regional council and that he was ''under political pressure''.
