Latvia's Union of Russians appeals election results in Liepaja
Riga, June 10 (LETA) - The leader of list of Latvia's Union of Russians in the Liepaja municipal elections, Jelena Osipova, has appealed the results of the elections in Liepaja, LETA was informed by the political force.
As many as 20,004 voters took part in the elections in Liepaja, while 19,819 envelopes were declared valid. According to the political force's calculations, 929 people, or 4.64 percent of the electorate, voted for the list of Latvia's Union of Russians, and only 62 votes were needed to overcome the 5 percent barrier.
According to Osipova, the missing voters "were simply stolen from the list" or disappeared due to a technical error. Osipova alleges that on the day of the vote, at around 13.50, a ballot box is said to have been moved in the polling station No.230. Osipova refers to eyewitness testimonies that the ballot box was brought into the polling station by several people, while the other ballot boxes were left unattended.
Osipova also noted discrepancies in the information on votes cast abroad: first, on the night of the vote, the official website published information that 64 votes had been cast from abroad, but later the number allegedly reduced. Although the vote is held in private and the content of the vote is not disclosed to anyone, the party claims to know that at least six people voted for the party abroad, but only two votes were counted.
Raimonds Lejnieks-Puke, a candidate on the joint list of the parties Sovereign Power and New Latvians, has also appealed the election results in Jelgava this week at the Central Election Commission (CVK) over technical problems experienced in the local elections.
As reported, the Liepaja Party represented by the incumbent mayor Gunars Ansins has won the municipal elections in Liepaja, according to data published by the Central Election Commission (CVK).
Counting the votes in all 19 polling stations in Liepaja, the Liepaja party received 45.74 percent of the votes, which ensures nine seats in the city council.
The second place with 20.26 percent of the votes goes to the Latvian Association of Regions, which will receive four seats in the city council.
The third place with 9.27 percent of the votes was taken by the National Alliance, which gives it two seats in the council.
The other parties in Liepaja have not overcome the 5 percent barrier.
Voter turnout in Liepaja was slightly above 43.4 percent.
