With lower voter turnout, there are also fewer misunderstandings - Berzina
RIGA, June 5 (LETA) - With lower voter turnout in these local government elections, there are also fewer misunderstandings, Kristine Berzina, Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission (CEC), told LETA.
Berzina described today's election process as peaceful and without any major incidents.
Asked why voter turnout has been lower than in other elections so far, Berzina noted that according to a population survey, voters have indicated that they will not vote this year because they "do not see meaning" or "do not care about politics". As a result, Berzina believes that people are tired, which could be due to the last year spent in pandemic conditions.
Berzina also drew attention to the fact that this year, along with epidemiological safety measures, there has been less pre-election campaigning, which in turn could also affect voter turnout.
Apart from minor delays, no information technology problems have been experienced so far. Berzina noted that in the past there were some concerns about the operation of the electronic voting system, however, so far the system has not experienced any delays.
