There is no basis to doubt election results or their legality - president

RIGA, June 11 (LETA) - At the moment I have no information from state security institutions or from other competent institutions that would cause me to doubt the results of the elections or their legality, said President Edgars Rinkevics on Wednesday after a meeting with Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity).

The President said that the conduct of the municipal elections would be assessed at the meeting of the National Security Council (NDP) on Wednesday afternoon.

The head of the Central Election Commission (CVK) has also been invited to the meeting, as well as the Minister of Smart Administration and Regional Development Inga Berzina (New Unity), who announced her resignation on Wednesday.

He reminded the news last week that there had been external interference in the elections, but in reality there had been none. "This is where already some problems began," the President said, pointing out that he therefore saw the NDP's competence in this matter.

The NDP meeting is scheduled to discuss how to organize the electoral process so that it is held to the highest standard of the law and without hitches.

The President said that if a party or a candidate believes that the elections in a municipality have not been held in accordance with the law or the votes have not been counted correctly, there is a very clear legal process to challenge such a decision.

At the same time, he said that something has happened that is not often seen in Latvia - the responsible officials had taken their share of responsibility. Administrative responsibilities are also being assessed, and there are still responsibilities to be assessed in relation to the system, Rinkevics said.

"I think this shows how seriously we take any kind of potential problems in the election system, which is the foundation of democracy," Rinkevics said.

The President expressed the hope that both this assumption of responsibility and the fact that there is not only an evaluation of the systems but also an improvement ahead will not have any lasting consequences for residents' trust in the electoral system.

In the President's view, the integrity of the members of the election commissions could in no way be called into question. He thanked them for their work and for not abandoning the polling stations in difficult circumstances, but for doing their utmost.

The President acknowledged that this election was not the brightest moment in the history of Latvian democracy, but there are painful lessons, lessons to be learnt and preparations to be made for the next elections as responsibly as possible.

As reported, vote counting following last weekend's municipal elections in Latvia was marred by technical glitches, which were reported in the electoral system already during early voting.
