Members of Jekabpils Region Council agree to nominate Ragainis for chairman

RIGA, June 11 (LETA) - Members of the seven political parties and alliances represented on Jekabpils Region Council have agreed to nominate former Jekabpils mayor Raivis Ragainis (Latvian Green Party) for the council's chairman.

Ragainis' nomination is supported by 12 councilors who ran in the June 5 local elections on seven tickets, which means that Ragainis might have 13 out of 19 votes on the regional council.

The parties pledging their support for Raigainis include his Latvian Green Party, the National Alliance, the New Conservative Party (JKP), the joint ticket of the Latvian Association of Regions (LRA) and Unity, Harmony and the Latvian Farmers' Union.

The six other councilors elected to Jekabpils Region Council represent the parties of former Jekabpils mayors Aivars Kraps (For Development of Latvia) and Leonids Salcevics (Jekabpils Regional Party).

As reported, an inconclusive outcome of local elections in Jekabpils Region has resulted in a highly fragmented regional council, comprising nine political parties and alliances.
