RIGA, May 13 (LETA) - The Riga City Council coalition today agreed to create a modern memorial in honor of Latvia's first President Janis Cakste, Vice Mayor Edvards Smiltens (National Alliance/Association of Regions) told LETA.

According to the idea, a modern, interactive memorial in a park or square that would successfully fit into the urban environment will be developed, not a monument.

This work is expected to be completed by November 14, 2022, when it will be 100 years since Cakste was elected president.

The Riga Monuments Agency will take care of the further realization of the idea.

As Smiltens previously informed, next year Latvia will celebrate two events important for its democracy and statehood. On February 15, 1922, the Constitutional Assembly adopted the Basic Law of the State of Latvia - the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia, laying the foundations for a democratic state of Latvia. On November 14 of the same year, the first President of Latvia, Cakste, took office.

"Janis Cakste's contribution to these processes was vital. Both as one of the founders of the state, as the chairman of the Constitutional Assembly, and as the first President of the State," Smiltens said.

''Cakste is one of the most important symbols of Latvia's statehood and democracy, and the creation of the memorial would show pride for our democracy, show the political maturity and stability of the democracy, strengthen the succession of values enshrined in the Satversme and our historical memory, and honor the great statesman,'' the Association of Regions points out.
