Most Ukrainian refugees travel further to other European destinations after arriving in Latvia - mayor of Ludza

RIGA, June 2 (LETA) - Most Ukrainian refugees who arrive to Latvia travel further to other destinations in Europe, the chairman of the Ludza Regional Council Edgars Mekss (Union of Greens and Farmers) told LETA.

Two border control points with Russia are located within the local government. The local government has issued 630 personal identification numbers to Ukrainian refugees, but the large majority do not remain. There are currently 170 Ukrainian refugees being house in Ludza Region.

"At first there was no flow, then it started to increase. A municipal telephone number has been set up for those arriving to Latvia and we organize transport and catering. Most of them go further south to other destinations in Europe," explains Mekss.

The chairman of the council adds that there are some refugees who know specifically where they want to go, but stay live in Ludza and only leave after a little while. "We accommodate the refugees in local hostels and other accommodation facilities," explains Mekss.

With two border crossing points in the municipality, Mekss describes Ludza Region as a "transit municipality".

"We welcome people, provide temporary accommodation, provide assistance. Every day someone arrives and leaves, so the amount of work changes every day," says Mekss.

As reported, Latvia has seen a rise in the number of Ukrainian refugees fleeing eastern Ukraine to Latvia via Russia in recent weeks.
