Riga City Council raises child birth benefits a week before municipal elections
RIGA, May 30 (LETA) - The Riga City Council, which on Friday assembled for what is likely to be its last meeting before the upcoming municipal elections, decided to increase child birth benefits.
According to the amendments passed by the city council to the municipal regulation on benefits and allowances in the Riga municipality, the one-time benefit for the birth of twins and triplets will increase as of July 1. The child birth benefit for twins will be raised to EUR 4,500, but if the family has three or more children, the benefit for twins will be EUR 6,000.
For a birth of triplets or more babies, the one-time benefit will be EUR 7,500. However, if the babies are born earlier than in the 32nd week of pregnancy, the family will receive an extra EUR 1,500.
As of January 1, 2026, the child birth benefit for one newborn will be raised from EUR 150 to EUR 450.
The rise of the child birth benefits will cost EUR 1.713 million to the municipality.
