This is first time in 20 years that I have seen such chaos in voting process - election commission chairwoman

Riga, June 5 (LETA) - The kind of chaos that has been witnessed in the work of election-related systems this week has never been seen before, Inita Freiberga, chairwoman of the Jelgava regional election commission, told LETA, noting that she has about 20 years of experience in the work of election commissions.

"I have 20 years of experience. There has never been such a mess," Freiberga said, adding that employees are getting nervous, in one polling station an employee even started crying, thinking she did not know how to do the right things.

Moreover, it is the polling station workers who receive reproaches from voters because of systems that do not work.

Freiberga revealed that the county has around 160 people working in the polling stations, most of them with experience. Therefore, the accusations by the Central Election Commission (CVK) administration that the system failures were due to lack of training of the staff were like a "stab in the heart" for everyone involved in the polling station work, Freiberga said.

She also criticized the communication with the National Digital Development Agency (VDAA), which responded only after three days.

"I am waiting with worries. We will have to run another program to count the votes," Freiberga said.

As reported, 140,185 or 10.18 percent of voters have cast their votes in the local elections in Latvia on the first four early voting days.

At the moment, the highest voter turnout is in Riga, where 12.15 percent of voters have cast their ballots. Voter turnout in Vidzeme is 10.46 percent, in Latgale - 8.93 percent, in Zemgale - 8.56 percent, while in Kurzeme 8.17 percent of voters have been to polling stations so far.

On Monday and Wednesday early voting has experienced technical glitches that affected operations of the systems and registers necessary for the polling process, while no problems were reported on Monday and Thursday

Polling stations will be open for early voting also from noon to 3 pm on Friday, June 6. Saturday will be the official polling day.
