87 groups of schoolchildren quarantined over Covid-19 in Ogre municipality

RIGA, Jan 17 (LETA) - Quarantine has been ordered for 87 groups of schoolchildren in the central Latvian municipality of Ogre over Covid-19 infections, the municipality's representative Nikolajs Sapoznikovs informed LETA.

Nine groups of preschoolers, which include five to six years old kids, are also quarantining because of Covid-19.

Irina Grigale, acting principal of Ogre High School No. 1, told LETA that 27 out of 57 student groups are currently in self-isolation. Most Covid-19 cases have been detected among 4-12 grade students, which is why all students in this age group will be learning remotely from January 18 to 31.

Grigale noted that 19 teachers are also on sick-leave with Covid-19 and other ailments, which also complicates the education process.

A total of 873 people in Ogre municipality have been diagnosed with Covid-19 in the past two weeks, which is the fourth highest incidence rate in Latvia. Last Saturday, Ogre recorded 72 new Covid-19 cases.
