RIGA, Jan 24 (LETA) - A more intense Covid-19 patients flow in Daugavpils hospital is expected in February, said Daugavpils Regional Hospital board member Grigorijs Semjonovs in an interview with the Latvian public television today.

He said that since Christmas the situation in the hospital has been quite calm, and the total number of Covid-19 patients in the hospital is around 70-80. There are, however, some other problems related with the Covid-19 outspread, and one of them is that medics "fall out". 

Semjonovs said that medics not only get the Covid-19 infection, but also burn out and face problems with chronic diseases.

He said that many patients are hospitalized with other diseases, and Covid-19 is detected only upon hospitalization. These patients then have to be isolated from others.

Semjonovs also noted that vaccination pace is slowing down, mostly due to a public opinion that the Covid-19 omicron variant has milder symptoms, but it is too early to say that Covid-19 will be over soon.

"The virus is mostly spreading among children. Our forecast is that an intense influx of patients can be expected in February, as soon as children and young people will bring the virus to the main risk group - elderly people," he said.
