Riga mayor proposes transforming Gertrudes Street into pedestrian zone

RIGA, Oct 20 (LETA) - Riga Mayor Martins Stakis (For/Progressives) plans to start a discussion on turning Gertrudes Street in the Latvian capital into a pedestrian zone.

Stakis indicated in an interview to Latvian Radio on Thursday that current renovation works on Gertrudes Street are going according to plan and are scheduled for completion by October 31.

Stakis noted that this street has remained closed for the past couple of years and there are no indications suggesting that this has caused any serious traffic problems.

It is too late this year to install parklets and flower pots on Gertrudes Street, but come the next summer season, the mayor will propose a discussion on the street's transformation.

As LETA was told at Riga City Hall, the total costs of the Gertrudes Street renovation project are EUR 1,368,418. The renovation works are carried out by RERE Vide.
