Local governments that have signed unsuccessful agreements on heating should help their residents - prime minister

RIGA, Jan 11 (LETA) - Some local governments who have signed unsuccessful agreements on heating supplies this season should find a possibility to help their residents, said Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) after the government meeting today.

The prime minister said that the local governments should find ways to support their residents, especially senior citizens as these had been decisions of the local governments that have caused the situation.

"None of these local government did not consult the local governments on terms of these agreements, and local residents are the ones who suffer as a result," said Karins.

At the same time, he reminded about the current support mechanisms that are in force - EUR 20 monthly payment to vaccinated senior citizens, doubled housing benefit, reduced mandatory purchase procurement rate, reduced electricity distribution tariff, increased support to protected consumers.
