Public center for Ukrainian refugees opened in Riga
RIGA, March 14 (LETA) - In order to help Ukrainian war refugees to socialize, a public center has been opened at Andrejostas Street 27 in Riga, LETA learned from social initiative Common Ground coordinator Inese Dabola.
There had been a vacant office building without any use at the address, but after the war broke out in Ukraine, more than 70 volunteers helped to put the building and the territory in order.
Right now there is a library available with books in Latvian and Ukrainian, quiet rooms, working rooms where people will be able to come to work.
"The main goal was to open a center where people can socialize. Also, we may organized some help if needed. For example, today we met with a girl who has to finish school this year. She could do it remotely, but she has a portable computer, but no charger. So we found a charger for her," said Dabola.
Also, consultations of psychotherapists will be available for children. Two therapists from Ukraine have already volunteered to consult in Ukrainian. There will be different classes in art therapy, Latvian and English language classes and others.
As soon as it gets warmer, the authors of the initiative plan to plant a garden, plant sunflowers, make the territory usable for concerts and other activities.
On February 24, Russia unleashed a war in Ukraine, targeting not only military, but also residential areas, Belarusian army entered the territory of Ukraine on March 1. More than two million civilians have been forced to flee their home and country. Thousands have arrived in Latvia.
