People are tired of pandemic and feel increasingly relaxed - survey

RIGA, April 30 (LETA) - People in Latvia have grown tired of the coronavirus pandemic and their attitude to it has become increasingly relaxed, shows the latest Covid-19 Barometer survey, conducted by Kantar research company.

The survey reveals that nearly half of Latvia's residents, or 43 percent, are still worried about the coronavirus situation. But this spring, people are feeling less anxious than at the start of the pandemic a year ago. In March and April 2020, the onset of the coronavirus pandemic was worrying 66 percent and 57 percent of the polled people, respectively.

The lowest level of public anxiety over the virus was recorded in June (29 percent) and August (27 percent).

In the latest survey, 55 percent of respondents admit that the current coronavirus situation is affecting their day-to-day lives. By comparison, it was affecting 31 percent of respondents in August 2020, 67 percent in March and 65 percent in April 2020.

Young people aged 18 to 24 were the most likely to complain about the pandemic's effects on their day-to-day lives.

A third of respondents, or 33 percent, admitted fearing the possibility of falling ill with Covid-19 no matter how hard they tried to avoid it. Last year, the share of such respondents was 50 percent in March, 40 percent in April, 36 percent in May, 26 in June, 27 percent in August and 43 percent in November.

Meanwhile, the share of the population going about their lives as usual without giving a damn about the virus has doubled to 22 percent.

Nearly a fifth of respondents, or 17 percent, feel that the seriousness of the situation is being exaggerated. Their share has grown from 8 percent in March 2020.

A large part of the population has grown tired of the consequences of the pandemic, and although 44 percent of respondents acknowledge the seriousness of the situation, they nevertheless believe that the authorities and the media have caused an excessive panic about the virus.

Most households in Latvia, or 66 percent, described their economic situation as satisfactory in the survey. This figure has stayed in the range of 62 to 68 percent throughout the pandemic, from March 2020 to April 2021.

People's outlook on the future is mixed, with 42 percent believing that soon things will improve and 32 voicing concerns about the future.

Most respondents, or 72 percent, believe that it will take a long time for the economy to recover. From March 2020 to August 2020, such an opinion was voiced by 70 to 75 percent of respondents.

The global survey covered 100,000 respondents in more than 60 countries. The latest survey in Latvia was conducted from April 12 to 16, polling 1,000 residents of Latvia aged 19 to 74.
