Low-emission zone in Riga city center to be introduced in 2027
Riga, March 27 (LETA) - A low-emission zone in the center of Riga is planned to be introduced in 2027, Viesturs Zeps (For Latvia's Development), chairman of Riga City Council's housing and environment committee, said today at a webinar on the impact of the introduction of a zero-emission zone on logistics.
He said that intensive work is currently underway, with experts working on different models, types of restrictions and implementation scenarios for low-emission zones.
The politician said that a broader discussion on the introduction of such a zone is planned to start in April.
Zeps revealed that the low-emission zone would most likely be created in the so-called railway circle and in the historic center of Riga. However, the exact streets affected by the decision cannot yet be named.
Zeps pointed out that by autumn it is planned to come up with possible scenarios for the low-emission zone, which will have to be approved by the Riga City Council.
The aim of the low-emission zone is to ensure that by 2030, no air pollution norms are not exceeded in the city center on any day.
The zone should reduce air pollution, traffic noise, improve road safety and increase the number of people travelling by cleaner transport.
