Riga, Dec 2 (LETA) - The Central Financial and Contracting Agency (CFLA) has received 23 projects in the selection of European Union (EU) funds projects for local governments, their institutions and capital companies on adaptation to climate change, representatives of the CFLA informed LETA.

The submitted projects requested support from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) in the amount of EUR 33.9 million.

In the open call for proposals, which closed on November 26, the Vidzeme planning region's municipalities were the most active, with seven project proposals submitted. Six project applications were received from municipalities in the Riga planning region, and four project applications each from the Kurzeme and Zemgale planning regions. Two municipalities in the Latgale planning region wish to implement projects.

The project applications mainly concern the rehabilitation of existing drainage systems and rainwater harvesting systems and the adaptation of the environment to climate change, as well as sustainable "green" and "blue" infrastructures, including nature-based solutions that contribute to climate change adaptation. Cooperation partners have been involved in the implementation of two projects.

The total funding available for the first selection round of the EU Funds program is EUR 34,762,296, including EUR 29,547,951 from the ERDF. The ERDF funding requested for the projects amounts to EUR 33,892,306, exceeding the funding available for the first selection round by more than EUR 4 million.
