Companies providing commercial passenger services and public transport of large cities will be allowed to organize rides for passengers with valid Covid-19 certificates

RIGA, Sept 7 (LETA) - Maximum capacity of public transport has been increased from 65 percent to 80 percent, while companies providing commercial passenger services and public transport service providers in large cities will be allowed to organize rides exclusively for passengers with valid Covid-19 certificates, according to the amendments to the regulations adopted by the government on Tuesday.

The Transport Ministry explained that the maximum allowed capacity has been increased because of the start of school year, which will seriously affect the passenger flow.

"Many routes in public transport have been adapted so that to transport pupils and students to education institutions and back home. Thus, these routes are used both by pupils and other passengers, therefore their capacity is close to the maximum," the ministry said.

The Transport Ministry said that the number of pupils on public transport does not increase the infection risk as pupils are being tested on a regular basis.

At the same time, the amendents provide for an opportunity for regional commercial passenger service providers and train rides to organize rides for passengers with valid Covid-19 certificates. Passengers and drivers on such rides will be allowed not to wear face masks.

At present commercial rides are carried on Riga-Daugavpils route, but soon the Road Transport Directorate plans such rides also in Pieriga.

In relation to trains, on routes where the seats are numbered, the passenger service provider may organize separate cars for passengers with Covid-19 certificates.
