Regional principle should be taken into account in Covid-19 policy - Levits
RIGA, Nov 17 (LETA) - Regional principle should be taken into account in the Covid-19 policy, said Latvian President Egils Levits in an interview with Delfi portal.
He said that there are huge differences in Covid-19 incidence regionally, especially in eastern Latgale region. Therefore, the president believes that additional restrictions should be introduced in this region because restrictions are effective.
"Additional restrictions should be introduced if there is higher Covid-19 incidence in any municipality or city," the president said.
Levits also said that he has discussed this regional principle also with Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity).
As reported, Latvia confirmed 1,501 new Covid-19 cases and 79 more people died of the coronavirus disease in the past 24 hours, the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) informed.
This is the largest ever daily number of Covid-19 related deaths registered in Latvia.
Latvia's cumulative two-week number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 population dropped from 1,058.7 to 994.4. The last time this number was below 1,000 was on October 13.
Of the new Covid-19 cases recorded in the past 24 hours, 970 people, or 64.62 percent, were unvaccinated or had not completed their vaccination course, and 531 people were fully vaccinated.
