Election winners likely to agree on candidate for Liepaja mayor
RIGA, June 6 (LETA) - The Latvian Association of Regions (LRA) is ready to support a mayoral candidate nominated by Liepaja Party, Liepaja mayor Janis Vilnitis (LRA) told LETA.
According to preliminary results of the local elections, Liepaja Party will get six seats on Liepaja City Council and LRA will get five. Two mandates will go to Harmony, one to the joint ticket of Movement For, New Unity and the Progressives and one to the National Alliance.
Mayor Vilnitis underlined the need to respect the choice of voters who cast the highest number of votes for Liepaja Party in last Saturday's elections. It is therefore logical that Liepaja Party should have the right to nominate a candidate for Liepaja's next mayor.
Vilnitis said that LRA would not get involved in any deals with other political parties and that he is ready to continue cooperation with the existing partners.
Liepaja Party leader Uldis Sesks also said that his party's first talks would be held with the current partner - LRA.
As reported, Liepaja Party emerged as the leader in this year's local elections in Latvia's southwestern port city Liepaja, leaving the Latvian Association of Regions (LRA) second.
Liepaja Party is led by the city's former mayor Uldis Sesks and current mayor Janis Vilnitis was the lead candidate running on the LRA ticket.
In Saturday's elections, 41.19 percent of voters supported Liepaja Party and 30.92 percent cast their votes for LRA.
Harmony placed third with 11.81 percent of the vote. The alliance comprising Movement For, New Conservative Party and the Progressives followed with 6.01 percent and the National Alliance with 5.04 percent.
Voter turnout in Liepaja was 28.84 percent.
