    Lidums reelected chair of Aizkraukle Municipality Council

    RIGA, June 26 (LETA) - Aizkraukle Municipality Council on Thursday reelected Leons Lidums (For Latvia's Development/Vidzeme Party) as its chairman.

    Lidums was reelected chairman of the Aizkraukle Municipality Council by eight votes to six and one abstention.

    The National Alliance had nominated Guntis Libeks as its candidate for Aizkraukle mayor but he did not get the sufficient number of votes.

    As reported, the joint list of For Latvia's Development and Vidzeme Party, represented by the incumbent mayor Lidums, won the most votes in the municipal elections in Aizkraukle Municipality, according to data published by the Central Election Commission (CVK).

    The National Alliance came second with 28.62 percent of the vote, winning five seats on the municipal council.

    Next with 14.1 percent of the vote was New Unity, while 11.39 percent of the voters supported the Union of Greens and Farmers/Latvia's Green Party. Both political forces won two seats on the regional council.

    The other parties in Aizkraukle failed to broke the 5 percent vote barrier to win seats on the local council.
