PM urges people to vote, stresses the sometimes decisive role of one vote
RIGA, June 7 (LETA) - Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) calls on people not to leave choices about their lives in the hands of others and encourages people to participate in the local elections, stressing the sometimes decisive importance of a single vote.
Silina herself voted on Saturday at the 75th polling station in Riga, at the Riga State Gymnasium No 1. After the vote, she told members of the press that it was good that people had five early vote days to cast their vote in the municipal elections, instead of three, as in previous elections. "It is clear that everyday life is not subordinate to elections. We managed to subordinate the elections to people's everyday lives," the Prime Minister said..
She stressed that it should not be believed that one vote in an election will make no difference, as there have been cases where it is one vote that decides whether or not a person or even a party is elected. "I think it is very important not to leave other people to make choices about their lives," said Silina.
The Prime Minister pointed out that although politics and politicians may seem distant to some people, it is politics, especially local politics, that determines what kind of streets we will have, what kind of public transport we will have, what kind of interest-based education we will have, what kind of schools we will have, and whether business will develop in the city. "I think it is very important to go to the polls, express your opinion and then hold politicians accountable," said Silina.
As reported, today is the official voting day in the local government elections in Latvia.
948 polling stations across Latvia will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Voters can vote in any of the polling stations in the municipality they are registered in.
