Daugavpils Regional Hospital well prepared for next Covid-19 wave, but there are concerns about lack of staff

RIGA, Sept 8 (LETA) - Daugavpils Regional Hospital is technologically well prepared for the next Covid-19 wave, but in practice everything will be decided by whether there will be enough medical staff, Grigorijs Semjonovs, a member of the board of Daugavpils Regional Hospital, said in an interview with TV3 this morning.

He admitted that although a state of emergency has been declared in the hospital due to the growing number of Covid-19 patients, the situation is not as serious as at the end of last year. At the same time, society must never relax, as the currently dominant Delta variant of the Covid-19 virus spreads much faster and more aggressively.

"It must be understood that we have all taken a breather during the summer and now everyone will have to comply with all restrictions. It is too early to talk about additional stricter restrictions when society does not comply with the existing ones, and this could also negatively affect our future course," Semjonovs said, hoping that people would get vaccinated and also strictly adhere to the Covid-19 restrictions already in place.

Asked about the readiness of Daugavpils Regional Hospital for the next Covid-19 wave, Semjonovs replied that technologically the hospital is now much better prepared than before, including precise action plans, but everything will depend on the availability of staff.

The member of the hospital board noted that the staff is very tired and since the previous Covid-19 wave they have not had time to fully "take a breather", so "in purely human terms we are on the same level, but in a slightly worse situation, because people are tired from all of this".

Semjonovs admitted that many hospital staff have contracted and recovered from Covid-19, but about 40 percent of staff are currently vaccinated.
